Hemp foods are sold through ordinary grocery channels in every province, with no licence, age check, or cannabis retailer involved. The trick is knowing which channel carries which products, because no single store carries them all.
Mainstream grocery
The large chains (Loblaws and its banners, Sobeys, Metro, Save-On-Foods, and the discount banners they own) reliably stock hemp hearts and usually one hemp seed oil, typically shelved with health foods or baking rather than with nuts and seeds. Costco periodically carries large-format hemp hearts at the best per-kilogram price in mainstream retail; availability rotates by season and region.
Bulk and specialty
Bulk Barn is the most consistent national source for hemp by weight, usually hemp hearts and sometimes hemp protein powder. Independent health food stores carry the widest range: cold-pressed oils, protein powders in multiple grades, hemp flour, and bars. Prices run higher, but turnover on oils is often better, which matters for freshness.
Online
Amazon.ca and Well.ca list most major Canadian hemp brands, and several producers sell direct from their own farms at competitive prices, particularly for 1 kg and larger formats. For oil, direct-from-producer is often the freshest option because it skips warehouse time. Our business directory lists Canadian producers that ship nationally.
Farmers' markets and farm gate
In hemp-growing regions (the Prairie provinces, parts of Ontario, the BC Interior), producers sell at markets and farm gates. This is the only channel where you can routinely ask the grower about the harvest year and press date.
The one exception: CBD
None of the above applies to CBD. Any product containing cannabinoids is sold exclusively through provincially authorized cannabis retailers, online or physical. A grocery or health store selling "CBD oil" is either mislabelled hemp seed oil or an illegal product. The distinction is explained in hemp seed oil vs CBD oil.
